              What is a handicap

A handicap is a type of bet where one team gets a head start before the match starts.  For example, in a soccer game between Manchester Utd and Liverpool, Manchester receive a head start of 1 goal.  This handicap is then added to the actual match result in order to determine the game winner.  If the game ends in a draw (e.g. 1:1) , this 1 goal handicap is added to the score of Manchester and the result after the handicap is 2:1 for Manchester, making them a winner for the handicap bets.

If the result is a draw after applying the handicap - you get your stake refunded at the bookmaker.

              Asian handicaps

An Asian Handicap eliminates the possibility for a draw outcome of a match.  As with regular handicaps, the underdog is given a head start for the match, however this head start is not a full number of goals/points.  Example:

Match Played Home Handicap Away
Liverpool vs. Man Utd 1.95 0:1/2 1.98

The handicap above can be interpreted as Man Utd receiving a 1/2 ball head start. They have a 1/2 ball advantage in the final match result.  If you place a bet on Liverpool and they win the match your bet is also a winner.  You lose in all other cases.  A bet on Manchester United will be a winner if they win the game or if the match ends in a draw, as Man Utd have a 1/2 ball head start.  Thus, betting on this soccer match is now 2-way betting instead of 3-way betting, as the asian handicap has eliminated the possibility of a draw.

              Quarter Asian handicaps

Special rules apply when the head start (handicap) is 1/4 or 3/4.  Example:

Match Played Home Handicap Away
Liverpool vs. Man Utd 1.95 0:1/4 1.98

The handicap above can be interpreted as Man Utd receiving a 1/4 ball head start. They have a 1/4 ball advantage in the final match result.

If you place a bet on Liverpool and they win the match your bet is also a winner.

If you bet on Manchester and and they win the match your bet is also a winner.

If the game ends in a draw, you lose half your stake if you placed a bet on Liverpool, or win half your stake if you wagered on Manchester.  The other half is refunded by the bookmaker.

              Handicaps at OddsAndBets

OddsAndBets provides arbs on soccer handicaps.  The different types of handicaps will appear as follows in your arb alerts:

  • Handicaps - they will appear on the Outcome line in the alerts as Liverpool (-1), Liverpool (-0) or Mancherster (+1), Manchester (+0).
  • Asian Handicaps - will appear as Liverpool (-.5) or Liverpool (-1.5) or Manchester (+.5) , Manchester (+1.5)
  • Quarter Asians - will appear as Liverpool (-.5&-1) which is a -3/4 handicap or Liverpool (0&-0.5) which is a -1/4 handicap.  Manchester (+.5&+1) is 3/4 or Manchester (0&+0.5) which is 1/4 for Manchester.

Bookmakers will display the negative part of the handicap in a different manner:

Liverpool -3/4 1.95
Manchester United +3/4 1.98

or

Liverpool 0 1.95
Manchester United +3/4 1.98

The above 2 examples are in fact the same handicap, however some bookmakers will only display the positive (+) part of the handicap and the negative part as 0.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Always verify that the handicap is the SAME with both bookmakers, i.e. if it's +1/2 on one, it must be -1/2 on the other outcome with the other bookmaker.  You're placing a safe wager ONLY if the positive (+) part is greater then or equal to the negative (-) part of the handicap.
  • Get yourself well acquainted with the different types of handicaps and the ways bookmakers display them before placing handicaps arbitrages.
